British Open prize money rises as pound slumps (AP)
ST. ANDREWS, Scotland (AP)—The winner of the 150th British Open will earn
850,000 pounds (.3 million).
While that is 100,000 pounds more than in 2009, in dollar terms the rise is
around ,000 (40,000 pounds).
A total purse of 4.8 million pounds—up from 4.2 million pounds—will
provide the runner-up with 500,000 pounds and 320,000 pounds for third place at
the event being held at St. Andrews from July 15-18.
“The Open Championship sits at the forefront of world golf and it is
appropriate that our prize fund reflects that position in the game,” Royal and
Ancient Club chief executive Peter Dawson said on Tuesday. “Over the last 18
months we have had to take account of the pound’s weakened position against the
U.S. dollar and the euro, and we have increased our prize money accordingly.”
