Couture picked last, takes it in stride (AP)

GATINEAU, Quebec (AP)—A few text messages from San Jose Sharks teammate
Joe Thornton helped Logan Couture avoid feeling unwanted when he was the last
man standing in the NHL All-Star draft.

“Oh yeah, Jumbo is all over me. He loves it,” Couture said with a smile,
while noting he also got a few texts from the Sharks training staff on Thursday
night. “They’re pretty happy for me.”

Even Couture’s family and friends got in the act, wondering what he was
going to do with his consolation prize—a new car.

“I had fun with it. You can’t take it personally,” said the third-year
player, who is competing in his first All-Star game. It happens to be in Ottawa
where Couture played junior hockey.

“You can’t take that personally,” said Couture, who will also have ,000
donated to a charity of his choice. “Being a young guy here for the first time,
playing on the west coast, it was something I knew was a possibility. I just
wanted to have a good time with it, and I did.”

Couture became the draft’s Mr. Irrelevant when he was the 38th and final
player taken in the draft that set the teams for this weekend’s All-Star
festivities. That left him relegated to
Ottawa Senators captain Daniel
Alfredsson’s
team after opposing All-Star captain, Boston’s Zdeno Chara, took
Dallas Stars forward Jamie Benn with his final pick.

Chara went with Benn, crediting him for playing in Sunday’s All-Star game
despite missing the past five games following an appendectomy.

Benn would have been fine if he was picked last.

“I don’t think it matters. Just getting the chance to be in an All-Star
game is a pretty good honor,” Benn said. “And for Zdeno to throw a shout-out
there was really nice of him.”

Others credited Couture for how he handled being left until the end.

“I thought he did great,” Ottawa forward Jason Spezza said. “Being a
younger guy probably hurt him, even when it comes to something like that. But
anybody that’s here is happy to be here. And he handled it with class. Top notch
all the way.”

Couture is the only Sharks player competing this weekend, and 36 points (21
goals, 15 assists) put him in a tie for 52nd in the NHL. He is coming off his
first full NHL season in which he made the league’s All-Rookie team after
posting 32 goals and 24 assists.

Couture said he didn’t recall ever being picked last for anything. Having it
happen for the first time among a group of All-Stars is something he can easily
accept.

“If it was a different setting, playing games back when I was younger, I
would’ve taken it a little more personally,” Couture said. “But right now, I
just had a good time with it.”

LOS ANGELES (AP)—Just 16 games into their new partnership, Blake Griffin
and
Chris Paul are already capable of grinding out victories for the Los Angeles
Clippers
on nights when nothing seems to work properly.

They are both certain the Clippers will find their flow pretty soon.

Griffin scored 20 points, Paul added 18 points and seven assists in his
second game back from injury, and the first-place Clippers hung on in the fourth
quarter for a 98-91 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies on Thursday night.

Mo Williams scored nine of his 18 points in the fourth quarter, and Griffin
added nine rebounds and eight assists as the Clippers maintained a narrow lead
throughout the final period despite feeling little cohesion on either end of the
court.

“That’s how we have to execute down the stretch,” Griffin said. “It’s a
good win against a great team. We shouldn’t be down on this win at all. They’re
not all going to be pretty.”

Caron Butler scored 17 points, and Paul also had seven rebounds while
playing back-to-back games after missing the previous five with a strained left
hamstring.
DeAndre Jordan had nine points and nine rebounds as the Clippers
bounced back from Wednesday’s contentious loss to the Lakers, dropping that
rivalry game after holding the lead for nearly every possession of the first 3 1/2
quarters.

The Clippers’ new nucleus is still learning how to respond to adversity, and
Paul thinks this gritty win over a strong playoff contender should help.

“Sooner or later we’re going to learn, because these little opportunities
can slip away from you,” Paul said. “We’ve got to build up as many wins as
possible, and it feels good for me to be out there. I’ve got to keep the energy
going. Every game means so much.”

The Clippers stayed atop the Pacific Division even during Paul’s absence,
and they bounced back solidly from Wednesday’s emotional loss to the Lakers, but
a tougher schedule looms for a franchise with just one winning season in 19
years. No team in the Western Conference has played fewer games than the
Clippers—including 11 in front of sellout home crowds.

Los Angeles did it this time with defense, holding the Grizzlies under
36-percent shooting and scoring 24 points off Memphis’ 17 turnovers.

“We kept them at a low field-goal percentage, but they made us earn
everything,” Clippers coach Vinny Del Negro said. “I was pleased with the way
we got stops at the end when we needed to. Different guys stepped up.”

Rudy Gay scored 24 points for the Grizzlies, who have lost two straight
following a seven-game winning streak.
Marc Gasol added 18 points and 11
rebounds on Memphis’ third stop on a four-game West Coast trip.

Gasol’s two free throws trimmed the Clippers’ lead to 91-89, but Butler hit
a driving layup, and Paul made two free throws after a steal with 45 seconds
left. Although Griffin didn’t score in the fourth quarter, the Clippers scored
seven consecutive points in the final minute to seal their third straight win
over Memphis.

“None of it was their defense,” Gay said. “It was us. I mean, they do
have some long athletic big men that alter a couple of shots. But for the most
part, we were getting good shots and just weren’t knocking them down.”

The Grizzlies had a day off after their loss in Portland on Tuesday in their
fourth game in five days. Gay managed just 11 points against the Trail Blazers,
but surpassed that well before halftime against the Clippers.

Paul made a four-point play during an early 11-0 run by the Clippers, who
jumped out to a 27-11 lead late in the first quarter. Rudy Gay made a 50-foot
shot at the first-quarter buzzer as the Grizzlies made a 14-0 run of their own,
keeping it close into the fourth quarter.

“We couldn’t get any stops down the stretch,” Memphis coach Lionel Hollins
said. “We were within three, and every time they came back down, they got it
back to five. We never got a stop where we could get a chance to take the
lead.”

NOTES: Both teams wore throwback ABA uniforms. The Clippers dressed in the
baby-blue-and-red gear of the Los Angeles Stars, while the Grizzlies sported the
Memphis Tams’ gold jerseys and green shorts. Starting in 1972, Charlie Finley
dressed his newly purchased basketball team in the same colors worn by his
Oakland Athletics and the NHL’s California Golden Seals. … Before the game,
the Clippers assigned G Eric Bledsoe to the D-League’s Bakersfield Jam in his
comeback from a torn meniscus in his right knee. The second-year point guard was
hurt during an offseason workout. … Fans near courtside included Rihanna,
Billy Crystal, “True Blood” actor Jim Parrack and David Justice.

Padraig Harrington in mix in Abu Dhabi (AP)

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates (AP)—After going winless in 2011, three-time
major winner Padraig Harrington is sensing a victory is just around the corner.

Harrington shot a 3-under 69 Friday in the second round of the Abu Dhabi
Golf Championship. His 140 total has left him in a tie for ninth place so far,
only three strokes behind clubhouse leader Thorbjorn Olesen in a tournament that
features the world’s four top-ranked players and Tiger Woods.

“I’ve been telling you it’s coming for a good while,” said Harrington, who
last won in November 2010 at the Johor Open. “So I’m always optimistic but I’m
seeing some great signs out there. I’m getting a quality strike on a lot of
shots and as I said, I seem to be rolling the ball nicely so just kind of have
to get used to it now and run with it.”

Harrington said he has started working with Dave Alred, who was credited
with helping No. 1-ranked Luke Donald find his current form. Describing his role
as a practice coach, Harrington said he was “trying to get the biggest transfer
from the practice round to the golf course.”

“He’s making me more diligent in my practice,” Harrington said. “As I
said all through last year, I felt I played well in practice and just never took
it to the golf course. He’s all about taking your practice to the golf course.
Really we time the practice, we count the balls. There’s a lot of things …
it’s really putting a lot more precision into the practice.”

Winning in Abu Dhabi would be especially satisfying for the 40-year-old
Irishman, who led going into the second round last year but was disqualified for
signing an incorrect card after a slow-motion replay revealed that his ball
moved ever so slightly after he replaced his marker.

The Royal & Ancient and USGA have since decided to revise the rule so that
players who learn of a violation after they sign their cards can be penalized
without disqualification.

Harrington said he was especially happy with his putting Friday in what he
called a “solid round.” At one point, Harrington had four birdies in a row and
closed out the round with five birdies and two bogeys.

“Certainly a little bit better into the groove but my irons, maybe I was
better off the tee today,” Harrington said. “Showed a lot of good signs. I
rolled the ball really nicely today. Nearly every putt I took, I gave the hole a
run. Certainly scared it a few times. So, yeah, I was happy with that.”

But Harrington isn’t getting ahead of himself, knowing he still will need
several good rounds this weekend to give him a legitimate chance of winning.

“Eight-under par, if it’s only one guy, it’s not too far behind,”
Harrington said. “But if there’s a whole six or seven guys or eight or nine
guys on 6-, 7-, 8-under par, 4-under is a little bit of work to do.”
